Shakespeare once wrote that the eyes are the windows to the soul. Consider all the impressions we receive through our eyes, and how much our eyes reveal about us. Most people believe that the only avenue for those with vision problems is corrective lenses, laser surgery or drugs. Sight is one of our most precious senses – fortunately there are nutrients and herbs that can play a valuable role in supporting the health of our eyes.*
Lutein and zeaxanthin are the two major carotenoid pigments in the human macula and retina. The macula is a part of the eye found in the center of the retina, directly behind the lens. It’s a tiny area composed of millions of cells that help produce the vision needed to read and to see objects clearly.
Lutein is very important to human health, but your body cannot manufacture it on its own. Consuming foods (ie. spinach, kale, broccoli, corn) and taking dietary supplements that contain it is the only way for the body to get lutein, which is needed by the eyes, skin, blood serum, brain, cervix and breast.*
Within the eye, lutein is highly concentrated in the macular region and filters out more than 90% of the blue wavelengths of light from the visible-light spectrum. Blue light, whether from sunlight or indoor lighting, can lead to oxidative stress and free radical damage in the eyes.
In regards to the skin, lutein is deposited in the outer and inner dermal layers providing antioxidant protection against exposure to the sun and environmental pollutants.

The LAST (Lutein Antioxidant Supplementation Trial) study was a 2004, 12-month, randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled trial that used FloraGlo®lutein.
A randomized, placebo-controlled human clinical trial in Europe found that 10 mg of FloraGlo® lutein per day for 12 weeks improved skin hydration and skin elasticity, and decreased skin lipid peroxidation.(1)*
